FEASt photo contest winners

We’re doubling up and announcing our 2010 and 2011 photo contest winners at the same time! It has been a truly woeful delay, but at long last we can tell you that Rob Vail, of St. John’s, is the 2010 winner for his lovely photo, “Flower.”

"Flower" by St. John's gardener Rob Vail

Our 2011 winner is Jackson McLean, who works with student volunteers at the Government House Vegetable Garden in St. John’s.

Vegetables photographed by Jackson McLean

Jackson writes, “These vegetables were grown as part of the Government House Vegetable Garden Program, an initiative of Her Honour, Jane Furneaux Crosbie.  Local Junior High and High School student volunteers planted, watered, weeded, and harvested the vegetables over the summer and fall, under the supervision and guidance of Government House gardeners Fred Walsh and myself.  The produce was donated to the Food Aid Centre Bridges to Hope, who then distributed it to people in need.” What a fantastic initiative, and what an encouraging photograph.

Both winners will receive a FEASt gift package in the coming weeks. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us!

FEASt activities meetings: finished for the season

Please be advised that our monthly activities meetings have finished for the season. Please keep an eye out for our updated meeting schedule in the new year, and huge thanks to all of you who came to meetings to share your ideas. Have a restful winter!

St. John’s Fruit Tree Project

GOT FRUIT or WANT FRUIT?

The St. John’s Fruit Tree Project is looking for fruit trees to pick in St. John’s and surrounding areas! They will give one third of the picked fruit to the homeowner, one third to a local food bank/community kitchen, and one third will go to their volunteer fruit pickers.

If you have a fruit tree to offer OR would like to be a volunteer fruit picker, please email stjohnsfruittreeproject@gmail.com.

Homeowners: Please let them know when your tree is ready to be picked and they’ll arrange a time that suits you and volunteers. Also, let them know if you have a ladder that could be borrowed (otherwise, they’ll arrange for their own). Homeowner addresses will only be given to the volunteers that are helping to pick the fruit at your house.

Volunteers: Please let St. John’s Fruit Tree Project know what days and times you are generally available. This will help with scheduling with the homeowners. Also, do you have a vehicle that could be borrowed if needed? When a tree is offered up, we’ll send an email to see who is available to pick on the designated day. The first four volunteers to RSVP will get to pick the first tree. We’ll give all interested volunteers a turn during the season as long as enough trees are offered.

FEASt Workshop at the St. John’s Farmers’ Market

Check out our events page for the workshop schedule.

The FEASt board needs you!

Yes, we need a hand with some tasty tasks and delicious duties. If you’ve been wondering how to get more involved in FEASt, we might have just the opportunity for you.

  • We need someone to take notes at our meetings, type them up, and send them out.
  • We need someone to chair meetings. This mainly involves compiling meeting agendas (from items the board members send you), attending the meetings, and keeping the conversation ticking along on time.
  • We’re also looking for members at large to take on projects as they come up, and to lend their voices to our dynamic discussions.

FEASt meetings are upbeat and exciting, and they happen twice a month (one full board meeting, and one activities meeting), in the evening. We cover all the food-security topics we care so much about – community gardens, workshop development, events like Open Garden day and FEASt Fest, local partnerships, etc. It feels great to spend time helping local sustainanility initiatives get off the ground, we promise. And then there are the potlucks… the legendary potlucks…

If you’re interested and have a few hours to spare every other week, drop us a line at promotions@feastnl.ca. Let us know which position interests you, and we’ll take it from there.

Thanks!

The NLEN is pleased to launch its 2010 Year in Review. With this publication we‘ve taken a snapshot of some of the incredible work being carried out by member organisations of the Newfoundland and Labrador Environment Network.

In addition to the stories submitted by our member organisations, we have also sought to highlight some key environmental issues and events in 2010. We‘ve include feature stories on Hurricane Igor, environmental management in our offshore oil sector in the wake of the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster, and efforts to protect Sandy Pond on the southern Avalon Peninsula.
