Sunday was our first day up at the Pippy Park Family Garden. We started by preparing the communal beds together, adding compost and raking them smooth. Some of the children collected rocks, others diligently pulled up stray weeds-with particular pride when prickly pesky thistles were extracted. A few children wielded rakes, pitchforks and shovels, building beds all by themselves!

We painted some rocks to decorate the garden. Children were given the option to section off a little piece of the garden that will be their own to tend to. One young gardener sectioned off a square and planted marigolds, nasturtiums, rosemary and chard in her part of the garden.

We planted pumpkins in the communal beds, which will be very exciting come Hallowe’en. It was a very productive first day up at the garden, complete with watermelon at snack time and a good old fashioned game of tag.

Danilo Gonzalez, arrived in St. John’s from Chile 3 years ago. For the last 2 years, Danilo has been working at Woodland Nurseries in greenhouse production – ornamental and tropical plants, flowers, herbs, among other crops.

He is an agronomist engineer and since 2004 has been working in urban agriculture projects in South America and now in Newfoundland and Labrador. These include social projects, community gardens, food production for self-consumption, landscaping, and environmental management.

Last year, Danilo created Garden Mind: a group of professionals dedicated to work with the people. They go to individual households or community centres and teach how to grow food year-round, both outdoors and indoors. Garden Mind uses simple techniques and mostly vertical gardening technologies but always using affordable and recyclable materials. They have been working with Food Security Network, McMorran Community Centre and Safer Soil, offering workshops and a technical assistance.

Garden Mind is always open to receive questions from people with little or no experience that want to start to grow their own food at homes, and even at work/office.

For the FEASt FEST workshop Danilo is joined by Luis Reyes and Katherine Meneses, all agronomist engineers from Chile.
